The Product Development Center (PDC), Department of Export Promotion plays an important role in the support of Thai product design for export. It also sets design strategies for competing in the world market, and at the same time, these strategies are aimed at increasing revenue and maintaining market share of Thai products.

Many activities are conducted for Thai exporters, manufacturers, and designers. Projects are classified by product category and each project consists of many activities, such as the design contests, seminars, workshops, and other related activities. Information from these activities are gathered and distributed to the public as knowledge for further application and research.

The PDC’s development and activities are divided into 3 phases:

1. First phase (1990-1995) Public relations advertising and product design support. Thai manufacturers and exporters are encouraged to realize the importance of product design and innovation by exhibiting product design samples from Japan, Denmark, and Germany etc.

2. Second phase (1995-2001) Focusing on gathering information on design, emphasizing studies on target customers and markets, user behavior in foreign markets. In this phase, primarily attention is paid on human resources, along with product design management.

3. Third phase (2002-2007) This phase involves searching for new products as well as Thai brands & trademarks. The aim is to have our own design and product development for Thai industry, by selling products, which are created and developed for the world market.

Design services are classified into 2 groups:

Group 1: Furniture, fashion & garments, leather products, and other assigned activities

Group 2: Jewelry & ornaments, home decorative items, toys, packaging, and other assigned activities
