Thai Cinema at the Cannes International Film Festival 2012

“Thai Night”, an event to celebrate Thai Cinema at the Cannes International Film Festival 2012.
A part of the 65th Cannes International Film Festival which was held from May 16 – 27 this year in Cannes, France, “Thai Night Cannes 2012” was organized by the Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, at the Intercontinental Carlton on Friday, May 18th, 2012.
The purpose of the evening was to promote Thai cinema and the Thai film industry to the international film community.
HRH Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi graciously accepted to preside over the evening’s festivities. Amongst those receiving Her Royal Highness were H.E. Mr. Poom Sarapol, Deputy Minister of Commerce; Miss Nantawan Sakuntanaga, Director General of the Department of Export Promotion (DEP); as well as numerous government officials and hundreds of film professionals and press from all around the world.
Among the celebrities and personalities attending the event were actress and model Penpak Sirikul, Producer and Director Pantham Thongsangl, Producer Pawas Sawaschaiyamet, Actor and Music Artist Day Thaitanium, Producer and Director Tom Waller, and Sirisak Kochapatcharin, Chairman of the Thai Animation and Computer Graphic Association.
In her speech, HRH Princess Ubolratana stressed the rise to international prominence of Thai cinema, noting that the 11 international awards won by Thai filmmakers over the past 15 years were paving the way for Thailand to become a major creative force in the world's entertainment community.
H.E. Mr Poom Sarapol, Deputy Minister of Commerce, emphasized the strengths and professionalism of the Thai film industry, which has translated into Thailand hosting over 500 international film productions since 2007, employing over 50,000 local film professionals in all areas of production.
The success of "Thai Night Cannes 2012" is proving that interest in Thailand and the Thai film industry is growing, heralding a new era of creative cooperation between Thailand and the rest of the world
