Halal Standard by Thai Top Poultry Exporter
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has chosen Charoen Pokhaphand (CP), a top Thai group of companies in poultry, telecom, and retailing, to represent Thailand as a world-standard halal food manufacturer to produce food to the Muslim market. CP sells more than 12,000 tons of chicken to this market.
Deputy Managing Director of CPF (Thailand), Mr. Supachai Angsupakorn, responsible for all processed food production, welcomed a group of overseas press from Muslim nations to visit chicken processing plant in Minburi and observed the production to ensure that all process is done according to world safety regulations and the halal standards.
Processing operation includes slaughtering and using ingredients in compliance with Muslim regulations. Mr. Supachai insisted that the operation is approved and accredited by the Central Commiittee of Thailand. Current number of export is 12,000 tons of chicken worth 960 million baht per year.
Apart from halal and food safety standards, CP also emphasized on energy conservation and joined the Carton Footprint program, run by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization Public Organization (TGO). Currently CP has 10 product lines certified with “carbon footprint” from TGO. These products includes chicken teriyaki, BBQ chicken, honey roasted chicken and chicken wrapped in seaweed.
Moreover, CP also has other energy saving operation such as using surplus ice from food processing in the cooling system as a waste heat recovery which saves 1.3 million baht and 389 tons of CO2 each year. Recent project - Solar energy in heating via solar collection technology with economizer heat exchange – has reduced 146,000 liter of bunker oil annually equal to a carbon credit of 432 ton/year.
