Each year Thailand’s health and wellness sector serves millions of visitors including medical tourists looking for treatment, executives searching relaxed therapies and industry and practitioners wanting to study the Thai message. In 2001, about 500,000 medial tourists visited Thailand for physical check-up on average length of 3 day. By 2001, the number increased to approximately 1.4 million people with average length of stay at 3 weeks for plastic surgery. Each patient spends about 130,000 baht for plastic surgery of which 40% for treatment and 60% for travelling expenses.
In turn, spa and wellness industry has also created millions of jobs at the grassroots level. Organic and herbal products are exported to Thai spas around the world.
The Thai Spa Association was founded in 2003 and has promoted approximately 450 spa businesses in Thailand and 15 countries overseas.
